The
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Unit started in 1938
under the direction of Sheriff Albert Skinner they consist
of seven horses and seven specially trained deputies who
utilize them. They operate from a barn located in Mendon
Ponds Park. The Mounted Unit continues to serve the
community by participating in a variety of community events,
providing special attentions to high crime areas, and county
parks. From their position on top of a horse, the officers
can spot problems and try to defuse situations at an early
stage.
The Mounted Unit provides assistance at a number of events
throughout the year which includes but not limited to the
annual Polar Plunge, LPGA, Bills Camp, Rochester Marathon,
Mendon Winter fest, Parades and assisting the Rochester
Police Department. They came to the Clarkson Horse Show
Grounds in 2009 and were well received. In addition, they
also participates in funeral details, and demonstrations for
the clergy and senior citizen academies.
On
June 6th, we visited the Mounted Unit in Mendon Ponds Park.
We were greeted by Deputy Johnstone who gave us an
incredible tour. Every inch of this facility was
well-maintained. All 7 deputies work part-time at the
stables and part-time on patrol. We learned about what feed
they use, bedding, pasture time, equipment used and the
special training each horse goes thru to be able to perform
their job when duty calls. We met 6 horses *up close and
personal*, Deputy Johnstone explained that most are draft
breeds and how they became a member of the mounted unit.
The 7th horse - *Patty* a 21 year old QH mare was inside
being groomed/saddled for a special 5 year old that came to
see the horses despite his broken arm (playing with his
friends). He wanted to sit on *Patty* but was apprehensive
but we all know the *magic* between horses and children –
Ethan is all smiles and an honorary deputy. A week later
Ethan had Open Heart Surgery – he is now a happy healthy 6
year old!
Thank you to Deputies Friedlander, Furnal, Schnars and
Johnstone for an amazing day! Now when you see this unit at
events, don’t hesitate to stop over and say hello!
